And the Nominees are....

Robert Downey Jr in.... Tropic Thunder?... Really?...Seriously?....

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Downey fan, and I thought Tropic Thunder was hilarious (which surprised me I didn't expect to like it)... And his role was definitely my favorite in the movie, but did it really deserve an Oscar nomination?
It definitely surprised me when I was looking up the nominations earlier and saw that...

I mean his character was great! And he definitely had some great lines... But I just didn't, and still really don't see it, as Oscar material... So is it his protrail of "...the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!"? Or is it the character itself with lines like...

"Being an actor's no different than being a rugby player or a construction worker, save for the fact that my tools are the mechanisms that trigger human emotion?

"I don't read the script. The script reads me"

"Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed... "

This film makes fun of just about any kind of actor there is out there, that's what makes it so great...And RDJ's character hits the over the top, trained method actor... But again, really a nomination?

  1. You're braver than I am.

I barely sat through tropic thunder and found R. Downey Jnr's role to be ridiculous.

If anyone had any spot of decent acting in the movie it probably would be Tom Cruise. ( I say this because it took me ten minutes to realize who i was looking at).

    Bottom line...
    You're right.
Downey doesn't deserve an Oscar Nomination but then again, very few of them do these days..

My nomination for best supporting actor?

The Aston Martin in "Quantum of Solace."

  2. I don't think an Oscar Nomination or Award is what an actor needs for validation as much as he/she needs the consensus of the public. I just watch the red carpet part to get a glimpse of Angelina or some actress that is wearing something revealing. Yes, I am a pig. Oink! oink!

That's the entire worth of the whole affair for me.
